The “SATOR square” is of Roman origin, the earliest carving was found at Pompeii. The text can be read in four directions, marking it as a mystical device. The usual translation from Latin is “the farmer Arepo has works wheels (uses a plough).” image: M Disdero. Taken at Oppede, Luberon, France.
